The count!

Counting in Japanese

There are times in the dojo when the count may be given in Japanese. Here is the most common form of numbers used from 1..10.  The last ‘i’ after ch is not pronounced (i.e. ichi sounds like itch in english) so the only two-syllable number below is roku (rock-ooh).

English Japanese
one (1) ichi
two (2) ni
three (3) san
four (4) shi
five (5) go
six (6) roku
seven (7) shichi
eight (8) hachi
nine (9) kyu
ten (10) ju
